About the project

ORIGINS

ArheoGIS Project which resulted in the publishing of the Arheogis. Baza de date a patrimoniului arheologic cuprins în Lista Monumentelor Istorice a judeţului Timiş. Rezultatele cercetărilor de teren (Arheogis. Database of the Archaeological Patrimony Included in the List of Historic Monuments from Timis County. Field Survey Results) is based on the research project „eGISpat Timiş. The Topographic Repertory of the Sites Included in the List Historic Monuments from Timis County”, a project realized in collaboration with the Western University of Timisoara, Literature, History and Theology College, Department of History, Chemistry, Biology and Geography College, Geography Department, the Ministry for Cults and Culture, and the Department for Culture, Cults and National Cultural Patrimony.

eGISpat Timiş project, based on the List of Historic Monuments of Timis County, Archaeology Subsection, 2004 Edition has the purpose of implementing a Geographical Information System (GIS) in order to protect the national immovable patrimony and its implementation. With this in mind the project team started a field survey in 2006, eGISpat project, later assembling the processed results under a more complex form, under the ArheoGIS project, conducted by the Arheo Vest Association.

THE TEAM

The actual research was made on a 4 year period, from August 2006 until August 2010. For this the team was composed of faculty members (archaeologists) and numerous volunteer students, members of the ArheoVest Association, but also other faculty members (geographers) and volunteer students not belonging to the Association most of whom are part of the History Department of the Western University of Timisoara.

MOTIVATION

The dynamics in real-estate development (be they industrial or residential) and infrastructure (roads, underground networks) has resulted in the recent years in the destruction of many an archaeological site, some of an inestimable historic and cultural value. Although there is a legislation regarding the protection of patrimony is is usually broken because people are unaware of it and because there is no adequate institution at the local or county level, that can effectively make use of the data base and information regarding archaeological sites.

At a national level there is only one data base, a text one, which is in many ways lacking and uncorroborated with field information, only referring to sites of national or regional importance, making no mention of any other sites, basically a data base which has been out of date for many years, sometimes decades. If we add to these the lack of a systematic field survey and spatial data, such as GPS coordinates, satellite imagery, orthophotograms, topographic surveys, 3D scans etc, effectively managed in an national database with multiple users, there is a definite need for implementing such a project, as well as applying it practically.

The ArheoGis project underlines the importance of modern instruments in collecting, processing and disseminating spatial data applied in archaeology, proving the fact that new technology is non-invasive and non-destructive, being operated without altering the archaeological site and offering in return very exact and diverse data. Internationally these data are implemented in complex ways, so our project wishes to adapt to the Romanian realities without compromising the quality of the science used.

Taking into account the generalizing of IT technology and non-invasive technologies of archaeological research and computerized data bases, the proposed project is just the aligning of the Romanian archaeological patrimony management to international standards. Far from being just a theoretical approach, our efforts have a practical end by making the public aware of a tool easy to use, that can be useful both culturally and scientifically but as well at the level of economy, tourism and administration. The protecting of archaeological patrimony is by far the priority that must be based on real instruments of control and usage, otherwise being deemed to remain just and ideal, a concept with no real possibility of use.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

          - putting together conceptual and practical models of managing the archaeological patrimony of each county, partly by the usage of interdisciplinary methodology and modern techniques of topography and archaeological cartography, GIS analysis, teledetection, data bases, web dissemination etc
          - corroborating interdisciplinary data applicable in archaeology from geography, topography, cartography, spatial analysis, and computer science, such as data bases computer management and 3D graphics, to compose an integrated system that can manage all the data related to an archaeological site. This allows both specialists and local authorities to know precisely the location of the site (with the attached technical file) in order to analyze it scientifically or arrange for protection or making use of it for tourim. . The most important technical objectives were concerned with:
          - Identifying the site
          - Establishing perimeter
          - Establishing protective perimeter
          - Dating finds

RESULTS

The List of Historic Monuments in Timis County, Archaeology Subsection, 2004 edition is an official list known to all institutions concerned with national cultural patrimony, from county level up to the Ministry of Culture. It contains 57 items, divided according to importance, from national (A category, 5 items) to locally important sites ( B category, 52 items). These 57 items are not referring to as many archaeological objectives but, in many cases, are related to the same topographical location, but present archaeological finds form different moments in time. At just a simple study of the List of Historic Monuments, the Archaeology Subsection only testifies to 44 distinct locations, from the 57 total that needed actual identification in the field.

After field surveys, the 44 locations from the List, 38 locations were identified, this being the final number of the locations in the new List of Historic Monuments from Timis County.

As a result of the project individual data files on every site were developed, which are composed of standardized data fields such as:
Location data: city/village, county, code, point, landmark in m or km, hydrological landmark, GPS coordinates, Stereo 70 coordinates, surface imagery, topographical map scaled 1:25 000, satellite images.
Geographical data
: total surface, relief, geographical description, topographical map
Historical data
: previous research, type of site, dating, photographs of archaeological findings, bibliography.
